ASPR Internships: The Pathways Programs

ASPR’s hands-on internship programs for students and recent graduates offer a unique experience in many of the career fields related to public health emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.​​​

Introduction

The Information Coordination and Reporting (ICR) Branch, within the Office of Security, Intelligence, and Information Management, is currently accepting resumes for unpaid student internship opportunities. The interns have exposure to many areas of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Depending on the COVID-19 situation at the time of the internship, this position may be partially or fully remote. This is an exciting opportunity for current students interested in public health preparedness and response. For more information about ASPR please see the About ASPR section​.

Position Description

The student interns will work directly with the Information Coordination and Reporting branch as a part of the Information Management Response Section and the Regional Information Management (RIM) Section. The internship schedule is flexible and will be determined based on the selected student’s course schedule and/or requirements set by their program of study.

Who should apply?

This internship would benefit a current master’s level graduate student (MPH/MSPH preferred) interested in project management, emergency management, or public health. This opportunity may also be suitable for a junior/senior level undergraduate public health student.

Required Skills

  • Organizational skills and good soft skills
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information into meaningful content
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Desired Skills

  • Good public speaking and the ability to facilitate/lead a meeting
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with automation or process flows for simple tasks in a Microsoft environment
  • Knowledge or experience in facilitating and coordinating trainings

Potential Projects

  • Advise on data collection and reporting methods for team data; help to build a communication structure within Microsoft Teams
  • Observe team processes and make reco​mmendations to formalize processes; assist with development of training materials
  • Build a searchable tool for data requirement elements in order to support disaster response
  • Observe flow of information into resource inbox and develop recommendations for more effective inbox cleaning and email management
  • Apply experience with automation or process flows to identify recurring tasks that could be streamlined
  • Assist with reviewing existing training materials and identify knowledge gaps
