International Day of Women and Girls in Science

"Find your community within the science/technology field as well as outside of it; this should be mentors and peers who support you and also those you can support."

How long have you been in science and technology?
I have been in science/technology for 12 years and at ASPR for over three years.

Do you have a specialty or focus area?
I am a Mechanical Engineer. Within this field, my focus area is performance testing, analysis, and manufacturing, primarily in the medical device space.

What motivated you to take this career path?
I was motivated to take an engineering career path because I enjoyed physics, math, and drafting in high school. I also felt called to serve in the health/medical field. Once I learned how engineers can apply their skills in this field to help people, it seemed like a great fit. My career path expanded to include emergency management as I learned about the U.S. Public Health Service and ASPR. Specifically at ASPR, I enjoy applying my engineering mindset and analytical skills to support our mission.

What specialty training or education prepared you for this career path?
I was well prepared for my career path after completing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Biomedical Engineering, at Cedarville University. My undergraduate education had a particularly significant hands-on focus (e.g., welding, machining, performance testing, etc.) that best prepared me. After I started working, I completed a Masters in Bioengineering. I continue learning through numerous trainings and hands on experiences.

What would you say to a woman who is considering a career in science and technology?
Start talking to those in the field about their experiences, research future opportunities online, and identify topic areas that you are interested in. There are many options, most of which I did not know of at first and am still learning about. Chances are, there is a career path or paths for which you have both a passion and a skillset. Lastly, find your community within the science/technology field as well as outside of it; this should be mentors and peers who support you and also those you can support. While the work and environment may be challenging at times, celebrating the successes, especially with those who understand your experience, is very rewarding.
